The word "Wordle" itself is a portmanteau of the creator's last name (Wardle) and the word "word." Josh Wardle originally created the game for his partner who enjoyed word puzzles.

Wordle was acquired by The New York Times in January 2022 for a sum reported to be "in the low seven figures".
